How to Manage Your Self-Care When You Have Chronic Health Problems

This week’s episode is a solocast in response to a listener question about the best way to manage your self-care when you’re dealing with chronic health problems. We know exercise is good for us, but some health issues leave us feeling like we’d rather do anything but. We also know some foods exacerbate our symptoms, but our pain levels leave us wanting to reach for that double-chocolate fudge whatsit for comfort.

So how do we balance our energy levels and willpower to make decisions that are good for us in the short- and long-term?

I’m sharing a few brief thoughts and ideas in this episode, including:

  • How to maintain healthy habits and manage your self-care when you don’t have the energy

P.S. An additional post-recording afterthought: if you have specific dietary restrictions and are tempted to break them when you’re tired or feeling poorly, I recommend deliberately adding activities to your day that are enjoyable/comforting/soothing that don’t involve food. Make a list in advance so you have it to hand when you need it.

    Hi Hannah

    Great topic. Like you I have a chronic disease that could be a lot worse. It is also not all that visible and comes and goes so it’s as if I’m making it up (or at least in my head that’s what I think people are thinking!). I have been wondering about this ‘asking for help’ on and off for a while now. I cannot do it as much as I know it makes sense. It’s as if I’m admitting defeat to an illness I don’t even want (not that anyone does – I’m just conversing with my annoying condition). I liked your suggestion of seeing how you can help out others – as obvious as it seems now you say it it makes sense and takes off the pressure. Thanks for addressing an important topic. And I suppose it’s useful for people without chronic conditions but who would just like to put their feet up from time to time for a well deserved rest :-) Cecile

      Thanks Cecile! I hope so :) As for admitting defeat, I wonder how it would feel if you were to think of it as not admitting defeat. When we ask for help, we’re doing what we need to do to give ourselves the best chance of thriving :)
