#89 Envy: What It Means and Why It Matters with Jake Desyllas

envyIn this episode, I'm sharing a recent conversation with Jake (host of The Voluntary Life and my husband) about the book Envy: A Theory of Social Behaviour by Helmut Schoek.Envy is one of those topics that is still a huge taboo, and consequently doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves. It's something we all experience, yet it's also difficult to talking about. The book is an interesting study of envy that looks at it in different historical and social contexts and reveals it's not something based on inequality but is universal and makes social co-existence possible. At the same time, it's important to keep envious feelings in check and make sure we're using it in a way that is constructive rather than destructive. In this conversation, we cover some of the book's key ideas, interesting theories about why we experience this emotion, the difference between envy and jealousy and how to respond when we notice we're feeling envious.
